World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
The upgrade option allows players to boost an item's gear rating up 700 points, and then add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory before heading to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded for their unique stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, don't change much post upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats, such as crit chance, attack damage as well as PvE and damage to PvP. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. In addition some weapons come with a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon are present on a single unit. This bonus may exceed the damage that a weapon upgrade alone can do.

This means that an upgrade from a sword with 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword would result in a weapon gaining 3% of attack damage. However the 3% does not mean that it will hit 3 times less often because it's an absolute statistic.
Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button within the item menu with the arrows that circle. This will reroll the item and alter its stats, however, it will not reset the weapon's level or bind to account status.
Armor
A few tweaks to your armor could make a huge differences in your capacity to withstand. Certain sets can offer massive improvements in the resistance to curses, poison and fire as well as magic. Trinkets can be upgraded when they are no longer useful and allows players to increase their power and value over time. They can be traded among players which makes them a good alternative to gold.
In general players should upgrade their most important items first. This means that the best-in slot items for each class are first upgraded, followed by their secondary gear and other equipment that they will not replace anytime soon (such as an earring or a cloak). It is also important to consider your class's preferred stats when selecting the items to upgrade. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats to tank players and they want to upgrade their chest, helm, and shoulders.
